Name and number is enough. We'll ring you back the same working day to talk it through.

Fridges and freezers aren't ordinary bulky waste. All waste fridges, freezers and chillers are classed as hazardous, because the coolant in the pipework and the foam in the walls can be harmful if released. They have to go to a facility permitted to accept and treat them, where those parts are dealt with properly. A fridge left in a back yard or dumped at the end of a ginnel isn't only an eyesore; it's hazardous waste sitting in the wrong place.

We move them out whole, without cutting, bending or puncturing any pipework. Please empty and defrost them a day or two before we come, and leave the door ajar so they dry out. American-style fridge freezers, chest freezers, under-counter units, wine coolers and drinks fridges are all fine. Heat-pump tumble dryers also contain hazardous coolant and need different handling from vented or condenser dryers, so tell us which type yours is.

Other electricals are WEEE, short for waste electrical and electronic equipment, and have their own recycling route. Washing machines, dishwashers, cookers, microwaves, TVs, monitors, PCs, vacuum cleaners and small kitchen appliances can all go. If you're buying a new appliance, ask the retailer about taking the old one back, as retailers should offer that. If they won't, or you've got a garage full of old ones, we'll take them in one go.

Paperwork and the rules

Gov.uk guidance classes all waste fridges, freezers, chillers and air-conditioning units as hazardous waste, because of their coolants and insulation foam. From a household, no consignment note is needed, but they must still go to a facility permitted to treat them. From businesses and landlord clearances, each movement needs a hazardous waste consignment note, kept for three years. Leeds City Council lists £18.06 as the minimum legal cost to dispose of a fridge, before labour.

Worth reading: Leeds council bulky waste collection or a private waste carrier?. For a few items, the council is often the cheaper choice and we'll say so. Here's how the council collection and tips work at the time of writing (October 2026), and when a private carrier makes more sense.

Fridge, freezer & WEEE removal: common questions

Why are fridges classed as hazardous waste?

Fridges and freezers contain coolants in the pipes and compressor, and the insulation foam in the walls can contain substances that are harmful when released. Gov.uk guidance says all waste fridges, freezers, chillers and air-conditioning units are hazardous waste. They need to go to a facility permitted to accept and treat them, not into a general skip or onto a scrap pile.

Do I need to defrost my freezer before you collect it?

Yes, please. Empty it, switch it off a day or two before, and let it defrost with the door slightly open and towels underneath. A freezer full of ice leaks water down the stairs and across floors while it's being carried. If you can't defrost it in time, tell us and we'll plan for it.

Can the council take my fridge?

Possibly. At the time of writing, Leeds City Council's unwanted items collection takes fridges and freezers smaller than 6ft x 4ft with the food removed, and the household waste recycling sites take them free from residents, except at Otley. If you can't get it to a tip, or it needs carrying from inside the house, a licensed carrier is the next option.

Will the shop take my old washing machine?

Retailers should offer to take back an old appliance when you buy a replacement, so ask before you order and check the terms. Some only collect at delivery, and may want it already disconnected. If the new one is already fitted, or the old one has been sitting in the garage for months, we'll collect it.

Do you disconnect appliances?

Not ourselves, but we can arrange it. Washing machines and dishwashers need unplumbing, and a gas cooker must be disconnected by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We can book that through a trusted partner, or you can sort it yourself. Once the appliance is free-standing and unplugged, we carry it out and take it away.
